My all-time favorite breakfast is sausage and gravy biscuits-no contest!! I had them on many birthday mornings, the morning I graduated from college, the morning I got engaged. They are the ultimate comfort food for me. This is the Tupelo Honey Cafe's recipe and it's the best one. Their biscuits are amazing too, but these were just bisquick biscuits. This makes a lot but it stays good in the fridge for a week. It's best the first day, of course. They do call for ground pork, but I use sausage.
4 oz ground sausage
1 1/2 tsp unsalted butter
2 Tbsp plus 1 1/2 tsp all purpose flour
3 cups half and half
1-2 tsp sea salt
freshly ground black pepper
In a frying pan, crumble and brown sausage on high heat until no longer pink. Reduce the heat to medium, add the butter, and stir until melted. Add the flour and cook 4-5 minutes, stirring constantly, until slightly browned. Continue stirring while adding the half and half and 1 tsp of the salt. Return heat to high and whisk constantly for about 5 minutes, until thickened. Add the pepper and more salt to taste. Serve immediately.
